Using hair padding will help you create the actual shape of the style. It saves you having to tease the hair and it will give you a smooth, sleek finish to a classical look.

Purchase tiny elastic horse bands from the saddler. They are inexpensive and come in a range of colours. They are fantastic to hold layers together when designing an up style.

Good preparation of hair prior to creating an 'up do’ will help make the job much easier.

Blow dry the hair in the direction the hair is to be placed.

Using a paddle brush and a thermal styling spray is essential to give a polished finish to the hair.

If hair becomes too stiff when styling, spray a light shine spray on top to break down the hair spray build-up.

Crisscross the pins with the hair to hold hair securely in place.

Use a light hair spray when styling, and then a stronger spray for the final finish.

If hair is oily, spray a light film of hair spray to absorb the oil.

- Never use a straightening iron to smooth the hair before styling; it creates static and leaves the hair too slippery to work with.
- Use a weightless shine spray with your hair spray for a mirror finish.
